Getting married on Uruguay’s east coast involves three decisions that are best kept separate: where the ceremony is held, how the civil marriage is formalized and what logistics the event requires. This article describes the types of venues common in Punta del Este and the surrounding area, summarizes the civil procedure with official data and points out the permits to consider if the celebration includes the beach.
It is aimed at resident couples and at those planning a destination wedding, including foreigners, as well as families organizing guest travel. The data come from sources consulted in October 2026, and several amounts and deadlines may change.
Types of venues
The offering falls into categories with different characteristics, and the choice shapes the rest of the planning.
- Estancias and chacras (rural estates): country properties with space for an outdoor ceremony, a reception and, in some cases, on-site lodging. They are usually rented in full, which allows guests to stay together, although catering, lighting and sound must be arranged from scratch.
- Hotels and resorts: they bring lodging, event halls and catering services together in a single establishment. Fasano Punta del Este states on its website that its spaces are set up for weddings, birthdays, retreats and corporate events; the events department contact listed there is +598 4267 0000 and eventos.pe@fasano.com.br. The site does not specify capacities.
- Beach and beach clubs (“paradores”): ceremonies by the sea, dependent on weather and wind, with specific permits when infrastructure is installed (see below).
- Vineyards: proposals from wineries in Garzón and the surrounding area, with a rural landscape and limited capacity.
- Reception halls: indoor spaces in Maldonado and Punta del Este, with services included and less dependence on the weather season.
In this research, only Fasano’s case was verified on its official website. Other establishments mentioned in the press are not named here because their wedding offering was not confirmed through their own channels.
Season and lead time
An El Observador article of October 11, 2025 on wedding tourism places the main season between November and April and notes that couples generally plan nine months to a year ahead. The same article says destination-wedding clients come mainly from Brazil and Argentina, followed by Americans and Uruguayans living abroad, with stays of three to seven days. These are statements from a planner and the press, not an official statistic.
Civil marriage in Uruguay
Civil marriage is processed through the Civil Registry (Registro de Estado Civil). The national page on gub.uy, updated on May 29, 2026, sets out the following elements:
- Age: minimum of 16; those under 18 require judicial authorization, according to that page.
- Participants: the two spouses and four witnesses over 18, with identity documents. A substitute witness may appear on the day of the ceremony without restarting the procedure.
- Documents: birth certificate and, depending on the case, divorce or widowhood documentation. Foreign documents must be legalized or apostilled and translated; those who do not speak Spanish need a Uruguayan sworn translator.
- Unmarried foreigners of legal age: identity document. For divorced or widowed people, a judgment or certificates with apostille and translation.
- Location: the ceremony may be held anywhere in the country, regardless of the spouses’ place of residence. The procedure is started and completed at the office corresponding to the ceremony location.
The process has two stages. The first is registration and publication of the notices (edictos), which must be done up to three months before the wedding date. The second, payment and scheduling of the ceremony, can be set at least eight business days after the first publication. The same agency reports a cost of UYU 1,149 for the procedure at the office (plus the notices in the Diario Oficial) and UYU 35,130 for a ceremony at a private address. Witnesses beyond the four are charged separately.
Maldonado office
The page for the Maldonado Civil Registry states that it operates at 25 de Mayo and Sarandí, in Maldonado, with prior online booking. That page has an earlier update date (March 13, 2024) and differs from the national one in amounts and in the witness requirement, so it is best to confirm with the office before setting a date. The El Observador article adds that departmental and national authorities are evaluating ways to make civil marriage easier for foreigners, with no verified changes as of the date of consultation.
Permits for events on the coast
Regulations vary by activity. The Ministry of Environment page on activities in the coastal defense strip (faja de defensa de costa), updated on August 18, 2026, provides for authorization to install infrastructure for special events in the beach area, at no cost, with an online form and a subsequent filing in Montevideo. That page does not mention weddings or private events specifically.
If fireworks are planned on the Maldonado coast, the Intendencia (departmental government) requires prior authorization, with a licensed company, liability insurance, a permit and a guard from the Prefectura (coast guard) and a contract with the fire department (Bomberos), according to its procedure published on gub.uy (updated on December 4, 2025).
Logistics
A destination wedding requires advance coordination of guest lodging (room blocks or entire houses in La Barra, Manantiales or José Ignacio), transfers between the airport, lodging and venue, and suppliers of catering, decor, photography and music. The press article cited observes that many couples combine a civil ceremony at the office with a symbolic celebration at the chosen venue, although it does not specify what proportion adopts this arrangement.
If you need support in Punta del Este
A destination wedding is largely settled before you arrive: choosing the venue, coordinating the paperwork at the Civil Registry, deciding whether the celebration needs permits, and arranging transport and lodging for guests. Modo Punta works along the Maldonado and Rocha coast and can guide those decisions with local knowledge.
