With more than 200 players and participants from different countries, the Copa Martinka is establishing itself in Punta del Este as much more than a tournament: an experience that combines competition, community and a passion for tennis.
The Copa Martinka has become one of the fastest-growing amateur tennis tournaments in Punta del Este. What began as an informal initiative among club members now brings together players from all over Uruguay and abroad, building a community that goes beyond sport. Behind the project is Marco Marella, who found an unexpected opportunity in tennis. “It started as a pastime and today it is what I do for a living,” he says. Connected to the world of real estate, he decided to channel his energy into organizing sports competitions, giving rise to a tournament that has not stopped growing.

A late-stage match at the Copa Martinika. Today, the Copa Martinka now has more than 200 players and continues to expand. The choice of Tenis Ranch as the venue was key in that process. “It was a mutual choice. The club chose me and I chose the club. From our first edition together, growth was constant,”, says Marella, also highlighting the positive impact on the club’s visibility and activity. One of the tournament’s distinguishing features is its diversity. Players come from Montevideo, from the interior of the country and also from abroad. “People come exclusively from Argentina to play, and we have had players from Europe and even Canada,”, he notes. Beyond the competition, the spirit of the tournament lies in the community it creates. “It is more than a tournament, it is a community. When the ball starts moving, we are all equal,”, he sums up. That atmosphere favors not only the level of play but also the creation of bonds that continue off the court. The format includes multiple categories — singles as well as doubles and mixed — adapted to different levels of play, which allows broad and balanced participation. This parity is, according to Marella, one of the keys: “The level is very even. It is hard to predict results, and that makes it more appealing.”. The tournament is currently in the phase of finalizing details and is already planning its next edition, scheduled for May. Sustained growth poses new logistical challenges, but also confirms the growing interest in this kind of initiative. For those who still hesitate to compete, Marella is clear: “Many hesitate at first, but once they play a tournament they don’t want to stop. The adrenaline and the excitement are unique. Afterward they wonder why they didn’t start sooner.”.
Those who want to be part of the next edition of the Copa Martinka can get in touch through its official social media channels or stop by Tenis Ranch for more information and to register. The invitation is open to players of all levels who want to live the experience. –
