Habitar Uruguay: the forum on the urban future of Maldonado

On October 8 and 9, the Punta del Este Convention Center will host "Habitar", a key event to debate urban growth, mobility and quality of life in Maldonado. With public and private sector participation, academia and international speakers, admission is free with prior registration.

Habitar Uruguay: the forum on the urban future of Maldonado

The exponential growth the eastern region of the country has experienced raises important questions for the future. In this context, Habitar Uruguay Punta del Este is born, an event designed to analyze in depth the urban development, infrastructure, health, education and services that consolidate the department of Maldonado as a permanent pole of attraction. The event will take place on October 8 and 9 at the Punta del Este Convention Center, organized by a team made up of Martín Laventure, Gonzalo Cortina, Soledad Marzano and Amílcar Durán.

Habitar Uruguay Punta del Este: a space to think about regional growth

According to Martín Laventure, the initiative arises from the intention to reflect on the evolution of the department over the last 20 to 25 years, with a very clear focus on the accelerated transformation of the last five.

“The ‘Punta del Este brand’ is the entire department of Maldonado. The idea is to analyze it together: the public sector, the private sector, academia and other departments. It is a case study, but the most important thing is to discuss the challenges that this growth, which is unavoidable, brings us.”

— Martín Laventure

The forum seeks to address comprehensively the dilemmas that come with population growth and the constant arrival of new residents to the area, while also offering key resources and information from our services guide in Punta del Este.

“People choose this place for certain characteristics, perhaps fleeing certain problems, but without meaning to they bring their problems with them. So issues of mobility, security, respect for the environment… there are a lot of things worth discussing, and we believe that a shared forum was missing.”

Trade show, panels and the future of urban planning in Punta del Este

Habitar will combine a hybrid format that includes a stand area for developers, real estate agencies and wineries, together with a full program of talks and panels featuring leading figures from industry and government. Among the highlights of the program is the participation of the Embassy of Israel, which will bring an internationally recognized architect specialized in master’s programs on sustainable city development. At the national and local level, the event will feature prominent players and firms in the sector, including Carlos Martínez Platero, accountant Walter Kaplan, representatives of Grupo Solanas, Sanatorio Mautone, law firms and well-known consultancies such as Ferrere, Estudio Posadas, Santiago Pastorino y Clavijo, and Adrián Sola, as well as educational and academic institutions such as Universidad de la Empresa (UDE), the Instituto Urbano Argentino and International College. The initiative also has the backing and strategic alliances of the Cámara Nacional de Comercio y Servicios, the Cámara Uruguaya de Turismo, the Cámara Empresarial de Maldonado, the Liga de Punta del Este, Destino Punta del Este, the Corporación Gastronómica and the Clúster Universitario, whose members will take part in the sessions.

Open to professionals and to the whole community

Far from being an exclusive summit for investors or industry technicians, the event is aimed at the whole community and at those who have chosen Maldonado as their new home.

“It is for everyone, including people who came to live here and want to have a say. If you choose this place for certain reasons, you would like to know where it is heading. It is not only a matter of development or investors; it is open to the public. The name somehow captures it: to inhabit it, to live it, all of us.”

— Martín Laventure
