La Barra Bridge: Punta del Este Icon Linking La Barra and Manantiales
Discover La Barra Bridge, one of the most emblematic postcards of Punta del Este. With its unique undulating shape, this bridge connects three must-see resort towns of eastern Uruguay: Punta del Este, La Barra and Manantiales.
History and Location
Opened in 1965 and designed by engineer Leonel Viera, the bridge crosses the Maldonado stream. Its innovative form comes from a prestressed-concrete technique known as the “stress ribbon”. In 1999 it was doubled with a twin structure because of increased traffic.
Why Does It Have That Shape?
Its undulating silhouette is not only aesthetic: it encourages drivers to slow down and distributes loads efficiently, making it a structure as functional as it is visually appealing.
Length and Technical Data
La Barra Bridge is about 150 meters long and 10 meters wide, with three spans of 30 m, 90 m and 30 m. Although there are no official figures for its total weight, a beam installed in 2022 measured 11.5 m and weighed 6.7 tons, which gives an idea of its robustness.
Safety and Speed
Traffic is currently limited to 45 km/h and speed cameras are active. Heavy vehicles are not permitted, and drivers are advised to proceed with caution.
What Places Does It Connect?
- Punta del Este: tourist epicenter with beaches, dining and nightlife.
- La Barra: bohemian destination with art, design and beach.
- Manantiales: calm, style and good food by the sea.
Besides being a connecting route, the bridge is an attraction in itself. It offers unmatched views of the Maldonado stream and is one of the most photographed spots in the department of Maldonado.
