In an increasingly demanding real estate market like Punta del Este’s, solid-wood construction is starting to position itself as an efficient, sustainable and high-precision alternative to the traditional system.
In an increasingly competitive market within Punta del Este real estate, the search for efficient and predictable building systems is becoming ever more relevant. In this context, structural solid wood is establishing itself as a solid alternative to traditional methods. We interviewed Rafael Casado, industrial engineer and leader of the Madera X project in Uruguay, to learn in depth about his building approach, based on planning, industrialization and living comfort.
From a personal search to an innovative building model
With more than 15 years of experience in construction companies and working alongside developers in Argentina and Uruguay, Casado found in solid wood a concrete opportunity for transformation.
“Madera X grew out of a personal concern. I was looking for an efficient way to build a house in Punta del Este, with technical quality, real comfort and a reasonable cost. That search was the starting point for designing a building process that offered real, practical and accessible solutions.”
Hoy coordina el desarrollo de proyectos donde la technical precision, planning and the client experience are at the center of the building process.
A high-precision, semi-industrialized system
The Madera X proposal is built on a semi-industrialized building system using structural, dried and graded solid wood, designed specifically for each project.
“We do not use generic solutions or standard materials. Each job is planned and produced with precision before it reaches the site. That lets us optimize timelines and reduce uncertainty on site.”
The walls are made of logs approximately 15 cm thick, ensuring efficient thermal insulation and moisture control, factors that matter especially in coastal areas like Punta del Este. The system uses few high-quality components, which reduces waste and improves overall control of the building process.

Differences from the traditional system
One of the main differentiators appears when comparing this system with the traditional wet-construction model, widely used in the region.
“The traditional system is more complex and demands a large amount of resources. Solid-wood construction, by contrast, is dry and industrialized. We can plan precisely and use only the resources needed.”
Even compared with other wood systems, solid wood stands out for its structural simplicity and technical performance, producing more efficient homes with greater control on site.
Sustainability and contemporary architecture
Wood is a renewable material that captures carbon and helps reduce the environmental footprint both during construction and in the home’s operating phase.
“Buildings of more than ten floors are being built in solid wood in developed countries today. Durability is proven when working with quality wood and proper design.”
In addition, the system can integrate concrete and steel, expanding architectural possibilities and achieving premium-level finishes.

Integrated management and cost predictability
Madera X manages projects under a direct-administration or turnkey model, adapting to each client’s needs. Execution times are usually under one year, with the design stage being the longest due to detailed analysis of requirements and adapting the project to the wood system. The average cost is around USD 2,000 per square meter, although it can vary depending on the project’s characteristics and level of finishes.
“The biggest deviations on site usually come from unforeseen events. That is why our focus is on detailed planning and a precise budget. The more control there is at the initial stage, the less uncertainty later.”
People at the center of the process
Beyond the building system, Casado stresses that the company’s purpose is to put people at the center of the project.
“We want the experience of building to be transparent and positive. We adapt to the requested design and aesthetics, analyze each condition and propose the most suitable solution for each client.”
With offices and a showroom in Maldonado, Madera X continues to consolidate its presence in the high-end residential developmentsmarket. To learn more about its building system and see projects in detail, you can visit its Instagram and arrange a personal meeting.
